  • The best time to cut back lavender plants is in the late summer or early fall right after the plant has finished flowering. Waiting until the plant has gone to seed and the flowers are starting to dry up allows for the full flowering period and the development of the aromatic oils in the flowers.

Once the plant has finished flowering, you can cut back the stems to just above the first set of leaves near the base of the plant. This will encourage new growth and keep the plant healthy and compact.

However, if you missed the late summer or early fall pruning window, there is still time to cut back lavender plants in the spring. The ideal time to do this is when new growth appears at the base of the plant. Cut back the previous year’s growth to just above the new growth to promote healthy growth and prevent the plant from becoming woody.

It’s important to remember not to cut back more than one-third of the plant’s growth at any given time. Pruning too aggressively can weaken the plant and reduce its longevity.
